Treating lower leg injuries

Soft tissue

For minor sprains and strains the first aid treatment is summarised as:

RRest
IIce
CComfortable support
EElevation

If not immobilised sharp bones will cause further damage

If the casualty has ‘rolled’ their ankle and has great difficulty in walking then treat as broken.
The boot or shoe should be removed and the ankle kept still and supported.

Possible Fracture

Immobilise the injured part of the extremity in the position of function, or as close to the position of function as possible.
For long bone fractures immobilise the joints above and below the injury. For injuries in and around joints immobilise the bones above and below the injured joint.
